Ever considered the phrase, "I got your back"? I have. Most obviously this phrase has to do with positioning oneself so a friend doesn't get attacked from behind. But i think we can cull another idea from it--that is, 'the spine'.

We've all heard the word 'spineless' to describe a weaselly character. That's why i like to think "I got your back" refers to maintaining another's spine. One offers the other the courage he needs to deal with the task at hand, namely, that of fighting.
